The Rivalry
In what is recognized as the nation’s 3rd oldest rivalry in high school sports, the Baltimore City College Knights took on the Baltimore Polytechnic Engineers in their annual homecoming came. In another classic, City would need two overtimes to defeat Poly, 30-28 and earn their fifth win in a row. Poly leads the overall series 62-60-6.
City College Dominate Polytechnic Early
City held the ball for over 7 minutes throughout the first quarter but was unable to score. In the 2nd quarter, still a scoreless game, a brawl between the two teams erupted. Unfortunately, this happens off the field in the stands sometimes, but this happened on the field. After a brief delay, City took the lead off a fullback Keon Moore rushed for the first touchdown of the game. They would add two more after quarterback Mike Bond found DeAndre Thomas for the two-point conversion. Bond would remain busy as he extended the lead with a 56 yard touchdown. City its in the drives seat as they capped the touchdown with another two-point conversion.
Poly Comeback
Like every rivalry, a blowout is just not acceptable. Immediately after City took a 16-0 lead and their alumni just knew they had the game in the bag, Poly’s K’Ron Hines returned the kickoff for 78 yards to followed by a successful two-point conversion to put Poly on the board. The momentum in M&T Bank stadium shifted from one side to the other. Late in the 4th quarter, Poly would score as DeVone Stubbs rushed for a 23 yard touchdown to tie the game at 16. City would turn the ball over on downs and Poly would play for overtime.
An Epic Overtime
On the first play of overtime, Jamaine Jeter scored to give City a 22-16 lead. They would fail to convert the two point conversion. Poly would respond on 3rd and 12 after Stubbs found Garland White for a the 12-yard reception. With the opportunity to win the game, Poly elected to go for two instead of the kick. and failed. City responded with Melvin Scott III catching an 8-yard pass from Bond followed by Bond who rushed the ball for a successful two point conversion. Poly responded scoring a touchdown immediately, but failed to complete the tying two point conversion. Baltimore City College would now pull to within two games of tying the overall series.
