Manchester United vs Southampton EFL Cup Final Preview

Manchester United will face off against Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium on this morning. Therefore I thought I would provide my overall thoughts and predictions.

Wembley Form

Manchester United love to play at Wembley they have won 2-1 in each of their last three visits to Wembley: Last season’s FA Cup semi-final and final and this season’s Community Shield against Leicester.

Southampton

Southampton will well rest between the two clubs. They last played over two weeks ago when they beat Sunderland 4-0.

Recent form

Manchester United was in midweek action, as they took part in the Europa League. They defeated Saint-Etienne 1-0  courtesy of a beautiful goal by Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Manchester United punched their tickets to EFL Cup. Jose Mourinho’s has his club is on quite a roll they have won five consecutive matches in all competitions and is unbeaten in their last seven.

Hungry

Southampton will come out with intensity and motivation as they look for their first majority cup win since 1976. Interesting enough the Saints have yet to concede a goal in the tournament which is an unbelievable stat. The Saints have defeated four Premier League teams including Arsenal and Liverpool in the semi-final.

Storylines

Leading into this match there are several; storylines to keep track of while watching the game. Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick have recovered from a calf problem and they are expected to play at Wembley. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, however, will miss the final game with a hamstring injury. It will be a game-time decision for Southampton’s winger Sofiane Boufal he has been struggling with ankle problems. Southampton will miss multiple players such as Virgil van Dijk, Charlie Austin and Matt Targett who are all sidelined with long-term injuries.

Conclusion

It will be a tight game but Manchester United should win this game easily. United will defeat Southampton 2-1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Martial, Mata will all have big games.
