No. 14 Richard Bland Defeats Frederick (Md.) 79-69

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Sophomore Gevon Arrington/Petersburg scored a game-high 21 points, adding a game-high eight rebounds, to lead No. 14 Richard Bland College to a 79-69 men’s basketball victory past Frederick (Md.) Community College on Saturday afternoon at the Monroe College Tournament in New Rochelle, New York.  FreshmanRicky Hicks/Bronx, New York added 14 points and a game-high three steals for the Statesmen, who led 30-22 at halftime while improving to 4-1 on the season with their third-straight win.  Richard Bland will play tournament host and NJCAA Division I member Monroe College on Sunday, November 13 at 2 p.m.

Richard Bland, ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll, led 30-22 at halftime against Frederick behind 11 first-half points off the bench from freshman Deon Joyner/North Charleston, South Carolina.  Joyner played just seven minutes, but was a perfect 5-5 from the field, including 1-1 on three-point fields while adding four first-half rebounds, as well.  Freshman Brandon Henry/Chester added five points off the bench during the opening 20 minutes.

The Statesmen backcourt took over in the second half, specifically Arrington and Hicks, who combined to score 35 of the team’s 49 second-half points.  Arrington scored all 21 of his points over the final 20 minutes, while Hicks added 14 points after the intermission toward the 10-point margin of victory.

Arrington led Richard Bland with his game-high 21 points, adding the game-high eight rebounds.  Hicks finished with his 14 points and game-high three steals, while Joyner added a season-high 13 points along with five rebounds.  FreshmanRobert Smith/Hampton added seven points, off the bench, while Henry and sophomore Jalen Jackson/Plainfield, New Jersey each contributed five points.  RBC shot 50% (32-64) from the field, including 29% (4-14) on three-pointers, and 52% (11-21) at the free throw line.

Richard Bland was playing Frederick for just the second-time ever in the sport of men’s basketball, and the Statesmen now lead the series, 2-0.
