Commanders Training is Off to a Competitive Start

Ashburn, VA- Much like a parents love of the first day of school, the Washington Commanders opened up training camp in some of the best weather July in the DMV can offer. The word of camp is competition and the Commanders are infusing that into every session of this camp. Coach Dan Quinn and most of players have mentioned that over the past two days. In the day’s opening session was all about Redzone and Goal Line situations. Both sides had their ups and downs. Lets look at what I saw:

  • Offense Struggles While The Defense Controls Early- In the early matchups in Goal Line and Redzone the defense was able to confuse and frustrate the offense. This is not a bad thing. The offense needed these struggles to figure each other and where openings can be. The defense understanding Jones’ system and controlling the play is what the coaches want. We have to remember is that these situations are scripted to favor one side. Competition.
  • Allegretti Comes up Injured-  Starting center Nick Allegretti came out of teams with the trainer. Nothing looked obviously wrong but it is something to watch. Every rep that Jayden Daniels took, Allegretti was the center. They are definitely building report with each other.
  • Interior Offense Line Creates Good Push- Offensive struggles did not slide to the run game. The starting interior offensive line (Cosmi, Allegretti, Paul)  consistently created push for all the running backs. The backups were able to do the same things as well. There was more under center running and passing which helps the run game.
  • Defense Mixes it Up– There were no defined units for the defense today. The defensive lin etruly goes 8 deep and that is without Dorance Armstrong. The linebackers have a. 3 person rotation (Luvu, Styles, Chenal) with Jordan McGee getting a lot of reps. Jeremy Reaves got a lot of reps at strong safety as well. Different looks for different situations.
  • Stock Up- Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Antonio Williams, Charles Omenihu, Sam Cosmi, Jaden Bradley, and Amik Roberston all had good days.

The team is back at it again tomorrow morning.
