Ashburn, VA- Day two of Washington Commanders Training Camp brought sunny skies and aggressive defense to the Commanders practice facility. Today we saw the potential of the defense while we saw an offense that is going through some growing pains. Coach Quinn has preached that competition will be the theme of camp and all the players talk about it. That goal is being achieved. Let’s dig deeper into some things I observed today.
- Front Seven Can Cause Chaos-Â This front seven can be game changers. All practice different members of the front seven made plays from rushing the quarterback, blowing up runs, and breaking up quick screens. The best part of this is that it was different players all the time. One important factor on the season is that the front dominates games. We saw today that they can.
- Tight Ends Make Plays-Â While the wide receivers had up and down days, the tight ends were able to make plays. The play of the day was a Colson Yankoff catch in the endzone over Jordan McGee. Chig Okonkwo was moved all over the place and made plays. John Bates had some catches as well. This bodes well as the more play makers the better. All of the tight ends being threats is what people have wanted.
- Offense has Growing Pains-Â Today, as was the case yesterday, the offense is being challenged at the onset of practice in situations that’s being dictated by the defense. These uncomfortable moments are created so the offense can learn situations. The offense has plays that work and can move the ball when they attack. So deep breath, competition is being created.
- Wide Receiver Struggles-Â There was some good plays and bad drops from this group today. The noise for another veteran in that room is growing by the day. Dyami Brown had the best play of the day for the group with a head tap catch in the endzone. But the day was littered with drops. Antonio Williams continued to be the best receiver not named Terry McLaurin.
- Kicker Battle Day 1-Â There were no live kicks on the first day but there were plenty today. Both Drew Stevens and Jake Moody went 6 for 6 during their sessions. Also in two minute drills when they had to rush on the field and kick they both made theirs. The only difference is the power that Stevens possess in his kicks. Moody makes his, Stevens blasts his.
- Stars of the Day-Â Malik Spencer and Rasul Douglas both had interceptions, Odafe Oweh, Josh Conerly, Tim Settle, Jeremy Reaves in three safety looks.
It’s a closed practice tomorrow then the fans will be there Saturday. The energy should be even higher!
