Award-winning creative A’ndre Davis brings his original play “Man of the House” to stages across the country. Man of the House will tour major cities across the U.S., including stops in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 22, Philadelphia on Sept. 19, and Baltimore on Oct. 3, before ending its run in Chicago on Oct. 10.
Davis serves as the writer, director, and producer of “Man of the House.” What makes this particular play different is that it arrives as more than a stage play; it’s a cultural conversation piece.
“Man of the House” shines a light on emotional trauma, communication breakdowns, pride, vulnerability, and the hidden struggles many men face behind closed doors. The play encourages audiences to rethink traditional ideas surrounding domestic abuse.
The production explores domestic abuse from the often overlooked and rarely discussed reality of when men are the victim, while opening deeper conversations around masculinity, men’s mental health, and generational trauma.
The national tour cast features an all-star ensemble: American R&B singer Monifah, best known for her 1995 hit “I Miss You”; Cortez Smith, who most recently appeared on the hit show “The Chi” for six seasons on Paramount+, Harlem-born comedian and rapper C. King from MTV’s Wild ‘N Out, Oshea Russell star of Tubi’s Tears of a Hustler and All the Queens Men on Paramount+, and Davis, who created this No. 1 urban stage play.
“Man of the House” dares to ask, “What happens when men suffer in silence?” This is a topic not always discussed in mainstream culture.
“This story gives voice to a topic that is prevalent but seldom ever discussed,” said Davis. “We want audiences to leave not only entertained, but thinking differently about communication, emotional health, and identifying domestic violence when the abuse is verbal and emotional as opposed to physical.”
“Man of the House” will be performed at the historic Howard Theatre on Saturday, August 22, with shows at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
