Week One is finally here and the Washington Commanders face the last team they played in the regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are the two time defending NFC East Champions and have been the standard in the division in the last ten years. Both teams have new coaches and different rosters than last season. Who has the advantage? That will be determined on the field. For Washington to walk into Lincoln Financial Field and get their 3rd win in the last six meetings up there, these three things must happen.
1. Contain Saquon Barkley
Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman has been one of the best executives in the league. The best move he made was trading for Saquon Barkley from the New York Giants. Barkley has had massive games against Washington where he averages 101 yards and almost one touchdown a game. The rebuilt defense of Washington, especially the front seven, will need to show their worth today. I expect Daronte Jones’ defense to attack Barkley and make Jalen Hurts beat them through the air. If Washington can hold Barkley for 75 rushing yards, then Washington has a good chance to win this game.
2. Spread the Love
Most people are excited to see David Blough’s offense and what it can bring. Personally I believe that the strength of the offense is the multiple looks and attacks from multiple players. To attack Fangio’s defense Blough needs to use all the weapons that Washington has at its disposal. Much attention will be given to Terry McLaurin, but that should allow Stephon Diggs, Chig Okonkwo, and Antonio Williams. The more diverse the offense is, the better it is for all parties involved including Jayden Daniels. If Washington spreads the love, and McLaurin, Diggs, and Okonkwo all have five receptions, then Washington will have a great chance at winning the game.
3. Attack Carter and Davis
Much as the center and guard positions for the Washington Offense have been discussed, and rightly so by the way, common sense would be to go away from the defensive line pair of Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. The best way to affect those guys is to go right at them. Have some power runs where you trap or wham block them. Then some zone stretch runs to get them running side to side. Help the line in that regard and success can be had. They did not play any in the preseason so their conditioning will be a concern. I’ve always thought the best way to confront a problem is to attack it head on and Washington should do the same.
Prediction
Everyone knows that the first four games for Washington is an extremely tough start to a season. I counter that with that Washington plays their toughest part of their schedule at their healthiest they are going to be in the season. I believe the reconstructed defense will be able to attack the Eagles offense who is adjusting with a new coordinator and losing AJ Brown. Washington’s offense has the element of surprise and a healthy Jayden Daniels. I believe Washington off the upset 24-17.
