The Aaron Roussell era at Virginia got off to an easy start on Monday night. In the Virginia women UMES game, the Cavaliers won 87 to 45 at John Paul Jones Arena.
Johnson climbs the record book
Kymora Johnson led Virginia with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting. She also had four rebounds and four assists. With that, she moved to eighth on UVA’s career scoring list with 1,746 points.
Two double doubles
Virginia also got two double doubles. First, Adeang Ring had 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first double double of her career. In addition, Breona Hurd had 11 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Mary-Anna Asare added 10 points.
UVA led 43 to 19 at the half. After that, UMES never got close. The Cavaliers won the boards 44 to 25. They also made 22 of 29 free throws. By contrast, UMES shot 37 percent and made just 2 of 17 threes.
Roussell sees room to grow
Roussell liked what he saw. “I thought overall, [I’m] really proud of our players,” he said.
However, he wants more. “Execution maybe not perfect at times tonight,” he added.
Next, Virginia visits Davidson on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
