To signify and celebrate Celtic’s unprecedented eighth Scottish Premiership title triumph in a row, FOX Sports Radio 96.9 FM/1340 AM’s Dean Perretta caught up with acclaimed Scottish professional sports writer, published author and football commentator, David Potter, to informatively reveal the story behind his forthcoming release “Celtic v Rangers: The Hoops’ Fifty Finest Old Firm Derby Day Triumphs” and, of course, the Bhoys current sheer dominance in the Scottish Premiership.
Dean Perretta: David, “Celtic v Rangers: The Hoops’ Fifty Finest Old Firm Derby Day Triumphs” is the title of your much-awaited, soon-to-be released book. With the immense historical lineage of highly passionate games contested between the Glasgow giants, can you talk about the first-ever time you experienced the Old Firm at the uber-atmospheric Celtic Park?
David Potter: My first Old firm game was the first game of season 1963/64. It rained heavily and it was a rotten experience for Celtic who were suffering from a massive inferiority complex about Rangers. Rangers had beaten Celtic 3-0 in the 1963 Scottish Cup final in May, and we simply could not rise above that, and lost 0-3 again. It was a typical “death wish” performance. On top for the first half hour, several chances missed, a penalty should have been given, then Billy McNeill was short with a pass back, Rangers scored and Celtic collapsed piteously unable even to believe that they were able to beat Rangers. This pattern was to be repeated many times this season.
