Washington Commanders Training Camp Day 3 Recap

The word of the day was heat, the heat was out in full force today. The crowd today was bigger today than yesterday and they provided a lift in the sweltering heat. As camp settles in there are always ebbs and flows so remember what happens today does not mean a trend or an upcoming season issue. Here are my observations from Day 3 of Camp.

The Good

Offensive Scheme- Yesterday when the offense did more traditional drop back passing, the defensive line created a ton of pressure. Today Offensive Coordinator Eric Bienemy went to a quick passing game and Sam Howell responded. Howell was 8-11 in full 11 on 11 drills and powerful runs from Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson neutralized the defense somewhat. This is an example of how coaching and scheme can help players succeed.

Tight Ends- The tight end group might be underrated but they are big and can catch the ball. Howell and Brissett, which is a feature of Coach Bienemy’s offense, are looking often for the tight ends. Logan Thomas and Cole Turner seem to get more of the features today but John Bates and Curtis Hodges had their chances as well. I just think this offense will allow the position to flourish this season.

Kicking Battle #1- Today was the first day we got to see live kicking and therefore the battle between Joey Slye and Michael Bagdley. Slye went first and made all four of his attempts with his final from 49 yards fairly down the middle. Bagdley came right behind him and did the same thing. So day 1 was a push but the competition was needed.

The Bad

Offensive Line Depth- If there is a concern it is the offensive line. The starters are fairly established with Lucas being able to push Wylie, however the drop off is evident with the backups. That means the line must go injury free and that is pretty much an impossibility. I still think the team adds line help during camp.

First Interception- Sam Howell threw his first interception of camp during a session of 7 on 7. Howell was trying to hi a crossing route and didn’t see Kam Curl in zone. I don’t put too much stock in 7 on 7 but if Howell’s first read isn’t there he can be rushed some. That play was an example. However the next play he hit Dyami Brown on a deep crosser down the field.

The Ugly

The Heat- I’m not talking about the basketball team either, the heat was borderline ungodly today. A fan passed out early and was treated by Commanders medical staff and then police and EMT’s. There were frequent water breaks for the players and the players was clearly gassed during the session.

Quote of the Day

On how much he thinks about his contract: “I think about getting picks like I did today.”
