Washington Redskins Training Camp Recap- Day 10

Richmond- On the hottest day of camp so far, the Washington Redskins started their preparations for their first preseason game against the New England Patriots. The heat did have an affect on practice, however the competition was high today. A few notable players did not practice and had conditioning days.  Here are today’s notable moments.

-Numerous players were off to the side doing conditioning and not practicing. Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, DJ Swearinger, Kapri Bibbs, Brian Quick, and Da’Ron Payne. Orlando Scandrick was given a veterans day off as well.

– With those players out there were some lineup changes. Maurice Harris lined up at wide receiver with Trey Quinn in the slot. On defense Vigil lined up next to Mason Foster, Dunbar took Scandrick’s spot, and Deshazor Everette lined up next to Nicholson. Pernell McPhee was rotating in behind Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith.

-The offense had an up and down day. The running game looked good today. Each other the running backs had impressive holes to run through and showed good burst. Alex Smith and Colt McCoy both ran numerous option plays out of various formations. Mostly sprint options to the outside. The passing offense suffered some today without Doctson and Crowder. The secondary was able to cover up on most play.

-One player who is moving up charts and impressing is corner back Danny Johnson. The college free agent had a great day. Johnson in zone coverage, got underneath an out route  and intercepted a pass from Colt McCoy. On the next play on zone, a swing pass to Perine was caught but Johnson would have blown him up. With Adonnis Alexander’s injury coupled with Joshua Holsey on the PUP list, the sixth cornerback position is open. Johnson has also been returning kicks as well.

-Jordan Reed had an up and down day. Reed had a few notable drops however he made a few tough red zone catches. Reed’s ability in the red zone with help this team tremendously. Reed isolated with Doctson, Richardson, and Crowder on the other will present problems for opposing defenses.

Injuries- Brian Quick thigh contusion,  Kapri Bibbs knee contusion, Zach Brown mild stomach strain, Josh Harvey-Clemons Knee strain all are listed as day to day. None are believed to be serious.

Press Conferences

Coach Gruden

-On Josh Norman’s training camp: Josh Norman is having a fine camp,… He’s doing great. He has established himself, he is a clear-cut, you know, top corner in this league for a number of years now. So, he just consistently works on his craft.”

-On the leadership of Ziggy Hood and Phil Taylor: ” Yeah it means a lot. Both of those guys are great leaders like you say and work extremely hard and great role models for the younger players. However, the younger players that we have don’t need a whole lot of tutelage.”

-On Orlando Scandrick: ” Well I thing the good thing about Orlando is while we’re feeling our way through (Quinton) Dunbar and (Fabian) Moreau, he can play the starting corner and base and sub, obviously, he’s a slot. He’s a very good slot he’s a nuisance player…. when we lost Kendall Fuller, we needed to get another nickel, a proven nickel, he’s that,”
