Dan Quinn Fears Serious Midfoot Injury for Jeremy McNichols

The Commanders may have picked up their best win of the season Sunday night, but it could cost them a running back for a long stretch.

Head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Jeremy McNichols has a midfoot injury and that the team is worried about it.

“He does have a midfoot injury,” Quinn said. “I’m concerned it’s serious. They’re gonna do some more scans as we get through tomorrow. But it’s enough that we’re concerned today. I’ll give you an update as it goes to Wednesday, but it’s something that the team for sure is concerned with.”

McNichols got hurt in the third quarter of Washington’s 27 to 10 win over the Eagles, limped to the locker room and did not return. He had five carries for 21 yards and one catch for seven yards before leaving.

The timing is rough. McNichols was just working his way back after a quad injury kept him out of most of training camp, the preseason and the first five games of the season. He returned in Week 6 against San Francisco.

The Washington Post’s Tashan Reed reported that McNichols could be out for multiple months and is seeking additional medical opinions. The team has not announced a timeline.

The injury leaves Washington thin in the backfield. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is already on injured reserve with a groin injury and must miss at least two more games, which leaves Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler as the only running backs on the 53 man roster. Both produced Sunday night. White ran for 55 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and Ekeler added 36 yards on eight carries plus a two point conversion.

With the trade deadline coming Nov. 10, the Commanders (2 and 4 and 1) will have to decide whether to ride White and Ekeler, promote a back from the practice squad or look outside the building.

Washington hosts the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Quinn’s next update on McNichols is expected Wednesday.
