Ben Hammond Leads Virginia Tech Past Coppin State 88 to 54 in Opener

Virginia Tech opened its season in style on Tuesday night. In the Virginia Tech Coppin State game, the Hokies cruised to an 88 to 54 win at Cassell Coliseum. Ben Hammond did a little bit of everything.

Hammond fills the stat sheet

Hammond scored 20 points in 33 minutes. He also had eight assists and seven steals. In fact, he came up one steal short of the school record, according to TechSideline. He made four of his nine threes, too.

Jaylen Curry added 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Meanwhile, Amani Hansberry had 16 points and a game high nine rebounds. Off the bench, Tyler Johnson scored 13 and went 6 for 6 at the line.

Hokies take control early

Coppin State scored first. After that, Tech ripped off an 8 to 0 run and never trailed again. The Hokies led 45 to 27 at the half. Later, they pushed the lead to 36.

The numbers were lopsided. For example, Tech shot 50 percent from the floor and 13 of 28 from three. The Hokies also had 20 assists on 29 baskets. On the other side, Coppin State turned it over 24 times. Brendan Johnson led the Eagles with 17 points.

Young wants more

Mike Young liked the finish more than the start.

“A little jittery early on,” Young said. “Our pace was better” in the second half, he added.

He also had a sharp word for Curry. Curry had one assist and six turnovers to go with his 19 points.

“I don’t know in 41 years of coaching that I’ve had a point guard with one assist and six turnovers,” Young said.

Curry took it in stride. “Scoring is just a thing I can do regularly, but that’s just one part of my game,” he said.
