On January 22 in Washington D.C., newly elected African Boxing Confederation President, Eyassu Berhanu convened with professional boxer, Jarrett Hurd along with the DMV’s most talented amateur boxers at Swift Nation Boxing. This historic event was meant to build a stronger bond between the continent of Africa and the DMV area promoting international boxing opportunities showcasing African talent on a global platform.
Hurd’s philanthropic journey to Ethiopia, has included donating boxing equipment to African youth which sparked the long lasting friendship between him and President Berhanu. The president acknowledged the potential within the DMV regarding amateur boxing. He approached Hurd with the vision to identify and nurture boxers’ talents for international competition.
“Listen In With KNN” Executive Producer and Host Kelsey Nicole Nelson sat down with the president and asked him about the importance of this partnership and how boxing has grown in Ethiopia. “Everyone is now together as a country. Now they are working together with boxing and in sports. That’s why I am traveling all over the world,” he said. He is looking to bring unity in the confederation, travel to expand the landscape of boxing, and bring exposure to Ethiopia and Africa as part of his vision as president.
Hurd and his fiancée also sat down with Nelson to discuss their own unique connections with Ethiopia. “My fiancéeis Ethiopian. She set up my press conference over there to donate and give back to the fighters,” said Hurd. The couple continued to chat about how beautiful the country is and wanting to merge African fighters all over the world. “Jared, how can you help these young boxers and educate them on their roots, seeing where they came from and where they can go with boxing?” said Nelson. Hurd summarized how he didn’t have someone in the same position to help and motivate him. He wants to be there with the young fighters to be a role model and give them more opportunities for success.
