Panthers Drop Preseason Game to Sanders, Browns 30-10

After not playing his starters until the third preseason game last season, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced earlier in the week that the starters would see action in Friday’s preseason meeting against the Cleveland Browns. On the other side of the field, Shedeur Sanders’ debut made the game, arguably, one of the most anticipated preseason games in recent memory. Sanders was listed fourth on the depth chart prior to starting Friday night’s contest.

The teams traded three-and-out possessions to start the game with Bryce Young finishing his night with a 5-yard touchdown toss to Jalen Coker. Sanders, who has had no work with the starting offense, made the most of his opportunity, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Newly signed Tyler Huntley took over in the third quarter and finished with 51 yards and one touchdown. Panthers rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan played into the second quarter and had 43 total receiving yards – including a 29-yard grab down the right sideline. Wide receiver Xavier Legette was ejected in the first quarter after trading blows with Browns cornerback Rayshawn Jenkins. Jenkins was the agitator in Wednesday’s joint practice as a small scuffle broke out after he threw the football at the back of Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard’s helmet after a play. Legette later tweeted an apology to Panthers fans for his actions.

On the defensive side of the ball, Carolina continues to have depth questions at every position group. Rookie Corey Thornton had a solid game to continue his strong training camp performance. He finished with three tackles, one for a loss, and one pass defensed. Camp continues on Monday and the team travels to Houston for joint practice on Thursday.
