Last night it was a night to remember because it was a game that was filled with momentum swings. The Kansas City Chiefs had their hands full as they took on the defending Superbowl Champions in the New England Patriots. Here are my overall thoughts on the game.
New start
The Chiefs had to start over with a drafting new running back. Their all-time leading rusher Jamaal Charles decided to sign with the Denver Broncos in free agency. In round three of the 2017 NFL Draft, Kansas Chiefs selected Kareem Hunt with the 83rd overall pick out of Toledo. During his college career, he put up impressive numbers 4,945 rushing yards 44 touchdowns.
Terrible start
Last night, Kareem Hunt put the world on notice and he will be somebody to look for this upcoming season. Hunt first rushing attempt did not go according to plan as has he fumbled the ball. In college, he never fumbled the ball once.
Debut
Hunt had tremendous mental toughness in order to bounce back after a terrible start. Hunt made history last night as he finished with the most scrimmage years with 246 yards in a NFL debut. Hunt had 148 yards on the ground, and 98 yards through the air. In addition, he had three touchdowns to put his name all over the game.
Hidden gem
The Chiefs obviously saw something in Kareem Hunt which 31 general managers didn’t. If Hunt continues to play like this he can be one of the many corner stones for their franchise. All the general managers will angry that they passed up on an opportunity to draft a special running back.
Versatility
Kansas City Chiefs have been flirting with becoming an elite team these last couple of years. However, Alex Smith has been one of the constant criticisms of the team. At the same time he has never really had weapons around him that he could count on constantly.
Smith has always been a good quarterback in the NFL. The knock on him is that he doesn’t put up massive numbers yearly but he manages the game and leads his time to victory. He had the best game of his career in Kansas City last night he went (28-for-35, 368 yards, four touchdowns. Now this team has numerous weapons such as Travis Kelce, Charcandrick West, Tyreek Hill just to name a few. As a result, their opponents will have extremely difficult studying their tendencies and play makers.
Conclusion
Hunt was the difference maker last night as he led the Chiefs to victory over the Patriots to shock the world in Gillette Stadium 42-27. However, even though the Chiefs were riding high last night it ended in devastating fashion as Eric Berry was carted off the field with an Achilles injury. This morning Ian Rapport reported that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Berry is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles.
