Sofia Goggia edges Lindsey Vonn to win Women’s World Cup

Lindsey Vonn looked as if she was going to place first in the Women’s World Cup, but Sofia Goggia pulled the slight upset knocking Vonn to second place. Goggia was .22 behind Vonn coming out of a turn, but turned it on to finish strong.

Vonn was chasing her 10th win, but Goggia stole her thunder and took first place. This was the first time that Goggia won the Women’s World Cup.”I thought I couldn’t reach her because of the training run as she was so fast,” Goggia said. “We had a good fight. I am so honored to ski with a legend today, beating her I am super touched.”

“I know that I won on the Olympic track, but things can change and I am not thinking about that just yet,” Goggia said. “I am just happy to focus on myself and ski well.”

Depite placing second place, Vonn was pleased about her performance, but knows she has a lot of work to do. “I chose number one as I thought the snow would get a little soft later on,” Vonn said. “But I think it got a little faster between numbers five and 20.”

Vonn’s time was 38:87, which was one of the fastest times on the course. “I am really happy with my run today,” said Vonn. “I definitely made some mistakes but my skiing was good.”
