The Commanders return to newly named Northwest Field to host a division , rival, the New York Giants. Both teams are coming off losses but the Giants seem more in disarray than the Commanders. However as we know in this matchup that doesn’t mean much as quarterback Daniel Jones usually has his best games against Washington. How can Washington take care of business today. Here are my three keys to victory:
1. Win 3rd Down
When looking back at last week’s game with Tampa Bay, the Washington defense were good at getting to 3rd down however they were unable to get off the field. The offense on the other hand had some convertible 3rd downs that they did not convert. This is the money down and Washington has to do better.
2. Keep Daniel Jones in the Pocket
The Commanders defense was able to pressure Baker Mayfield pretty consistently last week but they allowed Mayfield to escape and dance around convert huge plays. Jones is a different type of mobile as he will look to run way more that Mayfield did. Make Jones be a traditional QB and the chances of winning will increase. Just following the Titans blueprint from last week. Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne must step up.
3. Can Washington be the Aggressor
We were promised and more aggressive team under Dan Quinn and based off of last week the Bucs were a couple of steps ahead. With a lessor opponent in the Giants, can Washington dictate the game today? If so they can break the spirit of the Giants and have a fun home opener. If not then they open themselves to a battle they don’t need to be in.
Prediction
I expect a sloppy but exciting game with Jayden Daniels being the best player on the field. 27-17 Washington win.
