Washington Commanders, Who Makes the Initial 53 Man Roster?

The busiest day of the NFL Calendar is today and all 32 teams are maneuvering to make their rosters better. Who can they stash on practice squad, who can they trade. Washington is no different as they have spent three years rebuilding the roster. Some positions are still very thin while others are really deep and choices will have to be made. Here is my roster projection:

*Projected starters are in bold*

Offense- 25

Quarterbacks (2)- Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota- The team really like Athan Kaliakmanis and if Mariota is healthy then he will be waived and added to the practice squad. There is risk in this however the roster spot for a 3rd QB versus another position player, the position player wins.

Running Backs (4)- Jacory Crosky-Merritt, Rachaad White, Jeremy McNichols, Kaytron Allen. If McNichols is still injured Robert Henry will possibly take that spot or they go three and Henry to the practice squad.

Wide Receivers (7)- Terry McLaurin, Stephon Diggs, Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffery, Dyami Brown. This is the toughest group. I think the battle is between McCaffery, Brown, and Van Jefferson. All three have made different cases and all three can be trade candidates. McCaffery could get the most but I don’t think there is much trade value for any of them. Teams can just wait to see if they are released. Jefferson is the oldest but I actually think he has done the best of the three.  Jaden Bradley should be on the practice squad.

Tight Ends (4)- Chig Okonkwo, John Bates, Ben Sinnott, Colson Yankoff- This group has been determined for awhile. Lawrence Cager was given a shot but these four separated early.

Tackles (4)- Josh Conerly, D.J. Humphries, Trent Scott, Andrew Wylie. Bringing in Humphries gives them the ability to move Brandon Coleman inside. Wylie stays as a swing tackle and Scott has versatility. Laremy Tunsil of course to the Injured Reserve.

Interior Lineman (4)- Sam Cosmi, Nick Allegretti, Brandon Coleman, Chris Paul. I think we all expect a move here. Moving Coleman inside takes Paul’s place and a center to be brought in to support Allegretti. Matt Gulbin I think goes to the practice squad to give him time and possibly moving up during the season. A solid center could make Paul’s spot tenuous.

Defense- 25

Defensive Tackle (5)- Da’Ron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, Charles Omenihu, Tim Settle, Shy Tuttle- This group has been solid. Johnny Newton’s injury saved a very difficult decision.

Defensive Ends (5)- Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, Dorance Armstrong, Joshua Josephs, Javonte John-Baptiste- This group will be a strength if fully healthy. There will be rotation as Armstrong can go inside, Omenihu outside and even some linebackers at end. Drake Jackson’s injury solidified this group.

Linebackers (5)- Frankie Luvu, Sonny Styles, Leo Chenal, Ale Kaho, Kain Medrano. With Jordan McGee injured I think this is the five. McGee returns then Medrano to the practice squad.

Cornerbacks (5)- Amik Robertson, Trey Amos, Mikey Sainrisil, Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau. The health of Trey Amos withstanding, this is the group. If Amos can’t go expect Antonio Hamilton to be on the squad and Douglas to start. Darius Rush to the practice squad as well.

Safeties (5)- Nick Cross, Jeremy Reaves, Quan Martin, Tyler Owens, Percy Butler. With the release of Will Harris and Malik Spencer, this group was locked in.

Special Teams- 3

Kicker- Drew Stevens- He dominated the kicker battle with Matt Gay, earned the spot.

Punter- Tress Way- Early camp injury but was always going to be the punter.

Long Snapper- Tyler Ott-  Important and very good.

Anything you would change? Let me know.
