Morgan State men’s basketball coach Todd Bozeman has a team with great size and athleticism coming for the 2016-17 season.
“I wasn’t focused as much on wins and losses as I was on getting the chance to see the new guys,” Bozeman says. “We have seven new players. It was important to get those 10 practice days in and to be able to have film to teach from.”
The week on the road provided team bonding opportunities usually unavailable in the summer, but crucially gave the Bears a head start at gaining experience with such a new roster. Freshman Stanley Davis, who is 6’4 will be looked at as a major contributor this season and could be someone Bozeman builds around for the coming years.
“I think he’s going to be really good,” Bozeman says. “He has great leadership capabilities. He’s a freshman, and it was good to see him competing against somebody beforehand. Stanley’s going to be a major contributor for us. He has a lot of energy; he plays with a strong motor and he can get to the basket.”
Junior forward Phillip Carr was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s basketball defensive player of the week, announced by the conference office Monday. It marks the second straight week that Carr has been named the defensive player of the week. Carr, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, had a productive two-game span for the Bears last week. He scored a combined 33 points (16.5 ppg), but it was his defense that stood out most. Carr pulled down 17 rebounds (8.5
Carr, a Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, had a productive two-game span for the Bears last week. He scored a combined 33 points (16.5 ppg), but it was his defense that stood out most. Carr pulled down 17 rebounds (8.5 rpg) for the Bears and fell just shy of recording back-to-back double-doubles. He recorded 20 points with eight rebounds in a tough loss at Brown. In the next game against Bowling Green, he had 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Brooklyn native is currently ranked second in the conference in rebounding (8.4), second in offensive rebounds (20), second in defensive rebounds (39), and third in blocks per game (1.6). He is also first in free throw percentage (88.0 percent) and second in field goal percentage (.580). Carr posted a game-high 18 points to go along with 7 rebounds and a blocked shot against High Point on Monday (Nov. 28) at Hill Field House. It marked his seventh straight game of posting double-figures and was the third time he’s finished as the Bears leading scorer this season.
