2018 NFL Combine Doug Williams interview

Here are some updates from Indianapolis as the 2018 NFL Draft combine is underway:

Washington Redskins Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams gave a hearty interview on the outlook of the front office. Some of the main points he spoke of:

-The team will not franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins. Williams, who couldn’t speak on the Alex Smith trade because it is not official until March 14th, shared that the team did not want to wait around on Cousins. Cousins had shown he wanted to go into free agency and wasn’t going to negotiate until weighing his options and the team did not want to left out in the quarterback market.

– An offer has been made to linebacker Zach Brown. Williams shared that nothing was sent back from Brown’s camp so they are in the waiting game.

– Williams seem to come across as cornerback Bashard Breeland would not be coming back. The team will address the cornerback position in free agency and/or the draft.

– Left tackle Trent Williams and right tackle Morgan Moses both had surgery in the off season and are progressing. However both will not be ready until training camp at best.

-Free agency will dictate the team’s draft strategy. Williams stated that hopefully the team will address issues in free agency so that they can draft the best available player.

-Williams stated that this is a very deep running back draft. The team wants to draft a running back who can be a three down back and a compliment to running back Chris Thompson. Williams mentioned that the team averaged 1.4 yards a carry and that the running game will be addressed.

-The run defense was a major problem last year. Williams stated that they must stop the run. He did not give any clues about how they would address this issue but it is a concern of the team.

Williams praised the college scouts and says the front office has been meeting for two weeks and has a firm strategy for moving forward.

Other Redskins News:

Safety Su’a Cravens has been rumored to involved in a trade with the Denver Broncos, most rumor state for a mid-round pick. I’ve discussed earlier about Cravens.
