HENDERSON, N.C. — Sophomore Stanley Taylor/Petersburg scored a career-high 30 points, adding 10 rebounds for his third double-double this season, to lead No. 2 Richard Bland College to a 134-76 Region 10 men’s basketball road win at Vance-Granville (N.C.) Community College on Monday night in Henderson, North Carolina. Sophomore Deon Joyner/North Charleston, South Carolina, and freshman Wayne Clevert/Richmond each added 13 points for the visiting preseason nationally-ranked Statesmen (6-2, 1-0 Region 10), who established a school record for single-game points against the host Vanguards (0-6, 0-3).
Richard Bland led Vance-Granville at halftime, 68-36, and the margin for the Statesmen was similar in the second half, as well, at 66-40 against the Vanguards.
The 134 points surpass the previous record of 118 points scored last season on Nov. 18, 2016, during a 118-71 home win past Southside Virginia Community College. Prior to that, the Statesmen had posted a 116-94 home win past Montgomery (Md.) College on Nov. 24, 2013, and ironically, a 115-58 road win at Vance-Granville on Nov. 25, 2014.
Taylor led Richard Bland with his double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds. Joyner added career-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds, while Clevert added a career-high 13 points, as well. Redshirt-freshman Tyler Lloyd/Manassas finished with a career-high 12 points, freshman Tyrell Mendenhall/Newberry, South Carolina had a career-high 11 points and sophomore Robert Smith/Hampton scored 10 points. Classmate Ricky Hicks/Bronx, New York contributed a game-high 10 assists, while freshman Marvin Trotman/Virginia Beach added a career-high six assists.
Richard Bland will take a nine-day break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action with a Region 10 home contest against Pitt (N.C.) Community College on Wednesday, November 29, at 7 p.m. in Statesman Hall. The Statesmen follow their home game with another Region 10 road contest at Catawba Valley (N.C.) Community College on Saturday, December 2, at 3 p.m. in Hickory, North Carolina.
