Batting practice produced a plethora of hard-hit balls but many of them failed to go over the fence. The weather refused to allow the baseball to travel in BP and during tonight’s game.
Austin Hays, Anthony Santander, Gunnar Henderson, and many other Orioles put the lumber on the ball but mother nature kept the ball in the park time after time.
On a cold night in Baltimore, the Orioles started strong, often putting the Yankees starter Jhony Brito in jams. Brito was able to dance out of trouble early in the game, which allowed him to settle in. Brito would finish with 5 innings pitched and one run allowed. Cole Irvin for the Baltimore Orioles would finish with 4.2 innings and 3 runs allowed. Both pitchers battled and pitched well, however, as Irvin wore down in the 5th, the Yankees manufactured 3 runs with timely hits to break the tie and grab a 4-1 lead.
The Orioles’ swings often seemed like summer-time swings and if it were summer-time the results of some of the contact they made likely end up over the fence. Refusal to play small ball and instead aiming for home runs likely cost them at-bats in this game. As a result, the Yankees win this one 4-1 and set up a rubber match for the series on Easter Sunday.
