Plum Breaks NCAA Points Record in a season

By Ty'rique SimsMarch 21, 2017NCAA Basketball

Washington guard Kelsey Plum has put her name in the record books yet again surpassing the NCAA mark for most points in a single season. Plum needed 21 points to break Jackie Stiles’ record of 1,062 points. She finished with 38 in No. 3 seed Washington’s 108-82 win over No. 6 seed Oklahoma, as the Huskies advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Plum now has 1,080 points this season.

“What I’m going to remember from this night was the win, the feeling with my teammates. That’s it,” she said. “That’s not disrespect to the individual record. It’s really not. It’s just not something I pay attention to.”

She also had a career-high 11 assists to record her first career double-double in her 138th game.

“There was no way I was losing this last game on my home court,” she said.

Plum overtook Stiles for the NCAA all-time scoring record in February.

On Monday night, she knocked down a three to pull even with Stiles for the most points in a single season. She then scored on a driving layup for her 1,063rd and 1,064th points and sole possession of the record.

How Sweet it is!

No. 2 Mississippi State (31-4) vs. No. 3 Washington (29-5), ESPN2, 7 p.m. ET Friday: The Bulldogs of Mississippi State is known for their defense — yet scored 110 and 92 points in their NCAA tournament victories thus far. This after 49 points in the SEC tournament final against South Carolina. Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer has shaken up his starting lineup, though, and that seems to have worked. What will he do against the top scorer in the nation, Kelsey Plum? The Huskies scored 91 and 108 points in their two NCAA wins. It would seem more likely Mississippi State will revert to its defensive identity, and try to force a lower-scoring game against Washington.
