No. 25 Virginia Tech on the road to Steel City

By: Amber Miller

The Virginia Tech Hokies are 3-1 in the ACC and are in control as they take on the Pittsburgh Panthers tonight. After their win against Miami, they were placed back in the AP poll rankings at No. 25.

Against the Canes, quarterback for the Hokies, Jerod Evans, threw for two touchdowns and ran the third. Travon McMillian ran 131 yards. Virginia Tech’s defense had eight sacks and held Miami to only 42 rushing yards on 29 carries.

Bucky Hodges setting a career high of seven catches against Miami, scoring two touchdowns adding up to 66 receiving yards. The John Mackey Award named Hodges “Tight End of the Week.”

Three more Hokies were also named ACC players of the Week after their victory over the Canes: For the defensive line, Woody Baron, a senior out of Nashville; Linebacker, Tremaine Edmunds, a sophomore from Danville; and Terrell Edmunds for Defensive back with his outstanding interception against Miami.

Pittsburgh is coming off of their bye week and a three-game winning streak. Virginia Tech holds an 8-7 series lead but the Panthers have won six of the last seven.

Both units own a strong offense as Pittsburg averages 38.4 points per game and Virginia Tech 35.6. Virginia Tech’s offensive line has done a wonderful job protecting Evans. However, the Panthers defense is no comparison to Bud Foster who is holding the Hokies opponents to 17.9 points per contest. Quadree Henderson with a 93-yard kick-off return for the Panthers, special teams are in Pitt’s favor.

From Virginia Tech, Divine Deablo, a true freshman wide receiver will be representing Frank Beamer wearing No. 25 against the Panthers. They lost to the Tar Heels and Virginia Tech beat the Heels. If the Panthers suffer another loss they will be out of contention. However, a Hokie loss will open up the doors for the Heels.

Virginia Tech is looking for a win against the Pittsburgh Panthers Thursday night for the first time since 1999. Kick off is at 7pm at Heinz Field. Watch on ESPN.
