Redskins Training Camp Recap: Day 2

Coach Gruden Press Conference

Coach Gruden spoke on the importance of bringing in a veteran offensive tackle. The Redskins met with Donald Penn last night and were going to work him out today. The Redskins are extremely vulnerable at tackle at the moment. Morgan Moses is at his usual spot. Trent Williams is a no show at camp at the moment. Geron Christian is still recovering from his injury last season. That leaves Ereck Flowers who was supposed to move to guard as your starting left tackle with some rookies behind him. Even getting Trent back with the team, the Redskins still need to find another tackle.

McLaurin and Sims Rising

Rookie receivers are making their presence known at camp so far. Terry McLaurin has been putting on a show so far with his quickness and speed on display. When I asked about the young receivers Coach Gruden mentioned McLaurin by name. ” Terry is very unselfish. If you watch him at Ohio State, he’s one of the best blockers in college football. ” McLaurin also had an ankle breaking one on one battle with Josh Norman that was the highlight of the day. Undrafted Free Agent Steven Sims had another good day. Sims’ quickness is evident in space and those are the type of players this team needs.

Defense is Solid

The starting defense maybe better than advertised. The secondary was all over making plays, including an impressive interception by Josh Norman in coverage. The inside linebackers Jon Bostic and Shaun Dion Hamilton are syncing together nicely. The defensive line has been solid all camp. Let’s not understate the value of Rob Ryan for that defense. Some of this is hard to evaluate because of the issues of the offensive line. All that being said, the Redskins defense has the ability and talent to be one of the top groups in the NFL.

QB Battle

In day 2 of the QB battle and its still Keenum and McCoy neck in neck while Haskins was a little better than yesterday. The opening day starting QB, barring injury, will be either Keenum or McCoy. Both had some good moments and some bad ones but they present the best chance to win now. Also while the offensive line goes through some issues, it is better to have a veteran QB back there who can handle those moments. The preseason games will be better evaluation for these players.
