The Most Competitive Roster for the Washington Redskins Week 2

After a week the opening week of training camp, here is where I think the 53 man roster would stand if it was chosen today. Projected starters will be in bold:

Quarterback- Alex Smith, Colt McCoy

Nothing has changed here and with Colt McCoy’s one year extension he is definitely the backup. Kevin Hogan has had an up and down camp should be a perfect candidate for the practice squad.

Running Back- Samaje Perine, Derrius Guice, Chris Thompson, Rob Kelly, Bryon Marshall

Last week I had Rob Kelley off the roster along with Bryon Marshall and Kapri Bibbs on. Also I had Perine as the starter. This week after watching practice every running back has had their chance to show themselves. Coach Gruden speaks highly of Kelley and Guice. Others keep impressing with plays being made. Thompson also looks close to 100% and should be on the opening roster. I am beginning to think Gruden and his staff may keep five running backs. Right now Kapri Bibbs is on the outside looking out and Perine looks to be the closest to the bubble.

Wide Receiver- Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Maurice Harris, Trey Quinn, Brian Quick

No change here this week. The starters are firmly entrenched and are having a great camp. Maurice Harris seems to have the fourth position on lock. Quick has separated from the other receivers and Quinn looks to have a track on a returner and backup slot. Watch out for undrafted free agents Simmie Cobbs and Cam Sims. Both are big receivers with impressive size. Both should make the practice squad.

Tight Ends- Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle

No change here and no one has made an impression to change this.

Offensive Line- Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Geron Christian, Tyler Catalina

This group is coming more and more into focus. Last week I had nine lineman, this week I have eight. The starters are locks and Nsekhe should be the swing tackle with Catalina being the backup guard/center. Christian has had a ton of reps with the first team with Trent Williams being worked back slowly from his injuries and has held his own. If an injury were to happen either Williams or Nsekhe could slide inside.

Defensive Line- Jonathan Allen, Da’Ron Payne, Stacey McGee, Anthony Lanier, Matt Ioannidis, Tim Settle

No change here as everyone here has had food to great camps. Phil Taylor has looked good but there is no way this team keeps three nose tackles on the roster. Taylor looks to be the odd man out barring an injury.

Linebackers- Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, Zach Brown, Mason Foster, Zach Vigil, Ryan Anderson, Pernell McPhee, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Martrell Spaight

No change here from last week however McPhee has not practiced yet.

Cornerbacks- Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Orlando Scandrick, Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, Adonnis Alexander

No change here as well has these six are pretty much locks for the team. Danny Johnson is a practice squad candidate.  Scandrick looks to start opposite Josh Norman and when the team goes to Nickel, Scandrick slides to the slot and Dunbar comes in on the outside.

Safeties- DJ Swearinger, Montae Nicholson, Deshazor Everette, Troy Apke, Fish Smithson

No change here as well. Apke has passed Smithson for the backup to Nicholson, Smithson should be on special teams.

Specialists- K Dustin Hopkins, P Tress Way, LS Nick Sundberg

Hopkins has looked pretty strong during camp so far so no changes or competition here.

Offense- 24

Defense- 26

Special Teams- 3
