The Women’s Pro Baseball League Sets for First Season

The inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) is set to kickoff on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.

The WPBL, co-founded by Justine Siegal in 2024 who is the first woman to coach in Major League Baseball (MLB), brings back women’s professional baseball in over 70 years.

Philip K. Wrigley founded the first women’s professional baseball league, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) during World War II to maintain interest in the sport and ran from 1943 to 1954. 

Los Angeles takes on New York on opening day at 5:00 p.m. features Team USA’s, catcher Denae Benites and Kylee Lahners and Los Angeles stars, center fielder Mo’ne Davis and No. 2 overall pick Ayami Sato from Japan.

Lahners, an All-American coming from the University of Washington will be facing Sato who is the first two-time Women’s Baseball World Cup MVP and won six medals representing Japan.

Davis was drafted 10th overall and rose to her pitching prominence in the 2014 Little League World Series, becoming the first female to win and throw a shutout.   

On Sunday, Aug. 2 at 6:30 p.m. will include San Francisco’s first-overall pick Kelsie Whitmore matchup with Boston including international stars, Korean pitcher Hyeonah Kim and Canadian pitcher Alli Schroder. 

The regular season concludes on Sep. 6, consisting of 30 regular season games and each team plays 15 games.

Postseason play will kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for the first round, featuring a best-of-three series with the No. 1 seed taking on the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed playing the No. 3 seed.

Following the first round, the winners will advance to the Championship Series for a best-of-five series on Sept. 16.
