When called upon, Dwayne Haskins Jr. is ready to lead as the Washington Redskins starting Quarterback

Dwayne Haskins Jr. was drafted with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. There is always apprehension from NFL teams on whether a rookie quarterback should start right away. There are even more questions on if a rookie quarterback should ever start right away. Haskins is looking to change that perception and is ready to lead the Washington Redskins if his number is called. Haskins knows that there are two veteran Quarterbacks competing for the starting job with him. Those quarterbacks are veterans Colt McCoy and Case Keenum. However, Colt McCoy may still be recovering from injury. Case Keenum is healthy, but his Quarterback play has been up and down so far in camp. If Haskins plays well in camp he is well aware that Head Coach Jay Gruden could call his number sooner than expected. So he has to stay mentally and physically prepared to lead this Redskins team. Haskins is well aware of that and ready to work.

Dwayne Haskins has impressed Head Coach, Jay Gruden

The Redskins and Coach Gruden were high on Haskins to begin with. There were concerned if the New York Giants would draft him at pick #6 overall. Once the Giants drafted Daniel Jones at #6 instead, the Redskins knew they had their guy. There are current questions/concerns with the offensive line. There are a lot of injuries on the Redskins O-Line. That is not the ideal situation to throw a rookie into. Gruden knows that fact all too well. He is also aware that Haskins is a rare talent. Haskins also has maturity beyond his years. If Gruden has to start Haskins right away there will naturally be some hesitation and worry. However, Gruden and the rest of the staff will prepare him for success.

Dwayne Haskins is confident he can get the job done

Dwayne Haskins is prepared to lead if his number is called upon. He knows that in the NFL, this is the REAL DEAL. He will have to learn a whole new offense. He will also have more responsibility and accountability in this offense. He is prepared to adjust and make it happen.

“I want to master the playbook for me to be able to call plays on my own. For me to be able to understand what Coach Gruden wants when he calls a play and that will take time. Whatever they give me as far as install one, install two, whatever it is, I’m going to master that and make sure that’s what I know best for that practice. Everyday I’m just trying to make sure I know my job.”

Haskins exudes maturity beyond his years. He is prepared to do what he needs to do to make sure his team is successful and that he is prepared to be the best quarterback he can be. This is all the Redskins could hope for. Stay tuned for his progress.
