Young, Panthers Come From Behind to Win Thriller in Overtime

A lot has changed since Week 3, when the Carolina Panthers shut out the Atlanta Falcons 30–0 at Bank of America Stadium. Coming off a tough loss to the Saints, Carolina came out strong in this game. The defense forced a three-and-out, and the offense scored on its first drive for a 7–0 lead. But the momentum didn’t last. Atlanta answered with scores on its next three possessions and went into halftime up 21–10.

Drake London dominated early with 108 receiving yards on five first-half targets, including 71 yards on the go-ahead drive. While London worked through the air, Bijan Robinson punched in two rushing touchdowns, and Tyler Allgeier added another. Carolina’s defense struggled with missed tackles and blown assignments, a sharp contrast from the Week 3 meeting. Bryce Young briefly left in the first quarter with an ankle issue but returned on the next possession, heavily taped. Ryan Fitzgerald hit a 29-yard field goal before the half to cut the deficit.

Carolina opened the second half with a spark. Young hit Xavier Legette for a 36-yard touchdown, though the two-point try failed, making it 21–16. On the next kickoff, Natrone Brooks fumbled, and rookie Princely Umanmielen recovered at the Atlanta 32. The Panthers reached the 8-yard line, but Young was sacked on 4th-and-1, and they came away empty. The defense held, and Fitzgerald added another field goal to make it 21–19 late in the third.

Kirk Cousins entered for Atlanta after Michael Penix Jr. left with a knee injury. The fourth quarter turned into a field-position battle until Carolina turned the ball over on downs at its own 40 with three minutes left. Zane Gonzalez drilled a 52-yard field goal to extend Atlanta’s lead to six.

Then things got wild. Rico Dowdle broke loose for a 38-yard catch and run that was first ruled a touchdown but overturned. From the 10-yard line, Young later found Tetairoa McMillan for his second score of the day, and the Panthers converted the two-point try to go up 27–24 with just over a minute left. Atlanta answered with a 45-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

The Falcons opened OT but stalled at their own 19. Starting from their 30, Carolina struck fast. Two plays later, Young hit Tommy Tremble for a 54-yard catch and run to the 15. Fitzgerald finished the job with a 28-yard field goal, giving the Panthers a 30–27 win and moving them to 6–5 on the season.

A Buccaneers loss to Buffalo brings Carolina within half a game in the NFC South. Young’s 448 passing yards are the sixth most ever allowed by Atlanta, the most in the league this season in a victory, and a new Panthers single-game record. Joe Flacco (470) and Russell Wilson (450) both hit their marks in losses.
