The Most Competitive Roster for the Washington Redskins Week 4

After the 15-13 victory over the New York Jets on Thursday, the crowded running back position was now a position of need. The Redskins signed veteran running back Adrian Peterson on Monday. Also with the release of cornerback Orlando Scandrick, the roster projection looks very different from last week. Here is my current roster projection:

Quarterback- Alex Smith, Colt McCoy

Alex Smith played his first snaps of the preseason and looked good moving the offense. It was very vanilla play calling and Smith had only two incompletions. Colt McCoy looked good moving the offense as well. McCoy did have a pass intercepted but that was a perfect pass that went through the hands of the receiver Cam Sims. Hogan looked a lot better this week, especially in the two minute drill to win the game at the end, however Hogan is playing for a practice squad spot.

Running Back- Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley, Kapri Bibbs

First game cost the team Derrius Guice for the season. The second game against the Jets saw three more running backs injured. Samaje Perine had a 30 yard explosive run where at the end he hurt his ankle at the end is out for two to three weeks. Bryon Marshall got hurt next and will miss one to two weeks. And undrafted rookie Martez Carter, who led the team in rushing against the Jets, hurt himself and was released. The Redskins added Peterson and De’Von Smith to fill the position out. Kelley looks to start week one until Peterson takes over with Bibbs being the special teams and backup to Thompson.

Wide Receiver- Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Maurice Harris, Trey Quinn, Cam Sims

The other revelation from the Jets game was Cam Sims. Sims had an up and down day with a interception off his hands, but rebounded to show ability and talent. Sims has proven enough that if the Redskins were thinking about stashing him on the practice squad for more work than they won’t be able to now. Sims’ rise seems to come at the expense of Brian Quick. Quinn dropped a touchdown from Smith but the talent is there. Also Maurice Harris has rumored to have an head injury, that will be something watch.

Tight Ends- Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle

No change this week. Pretty locked in stone.

Offensive Line- Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Geron Christian, Tyler Catalina, Tony Bergstrom

No change here and unless injuries occur this will stay locked in.

Defensive Line- Jonathan Allen, Da’Ron Payne, Ziggy Hood, Anthony Lanier, Matt Ioannidis, Tim Settle

This group is pretty much locked in until Stacey McGee returns. We got to see Payne and Allen together and both had an impact in their two series. This is the strength of the team.

Linebackers- Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, Zach Brown, Mason Foster, Zach Vigil, Ryan Anderson, Pernell McPhee, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Martrell Spaight, Pete Robinson

The release of Orlando Scandrick actually helps the Martrell Spaight and Pete Robinson question. Now the team can keep both, Robinson to back up the outside linebackers and Spaight the inside. Ten linebackers may seem like a lot, but this gives the team major flexibility of defense. Also covers them in the case of injury.

Cornerbacks- Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, Adonnis Alexander, Danny Johnson

With the release of Scandrick, this six is pretty much set. We saw the starting corners and Moreau in the slot. Johnson and Stroman both played well and participated on special teams. This group seems to be pretty settled as well.

Safeties- DJ Swearinger, Montae Nicholson, Deshazor Everette, Troy Apke

This four has been steady and look to be locks for the team. Fish Smithson has a chance with the Scandrick release to make the team.

Specialists- K Dustin Hopkins, P Tress Way, LS Nick Sundberg

Hopkins made five field goals against the Jets which is good however he did knock one off the upright.

Offense- 24

Defense- 26

Special Teams- 3
